Bibi’s story succinctly conveys the dynamics of affective exchange triads between curtidoras, their partners, and their kin: material assistance, gifts, and luxuries flow from white men to curtidoras and are seen as signs of care and affection. In return, curtidoras provide love, attractiveness, and company. Curtidoras then share some of the gifts they receive from men with their female kin, who show gratitude and, over time, treat them with respect as their status grows.
